Recycled Paper, Sustainable Forestry and money

Recycled paper, sustainable forestry and money

How is paper made?

Most paper is made in large machines using a rotary wire mesh called a beard. A solution of 5% cellulose fibers and 95% water drops on the grid and the water falls through interlocking fibers leave behind. The fiber mat is dried and passed through large cylinders heating and paper forms. As the machine runs, the paper surface is smoothed by the addition of starch and clay fillers. At the end of the beard continuous sheet of paper is wound into large rolls, and then be cut into slices.

Well any type of fiber can be used to manufacture Paper, plastic silk. Traditionally, cotton rags used to make high quality paper, but in the last hundred years have been replaced rags for softwoods – such as spruce, pine, fir, larch and spruce – as the main source of fiber, with occasional hardwoods such as eucalyptus, poplar or birch. The trees are mechanically crushed to produce a fiber raw paper quality. More often, the wood is cooked with a solution of chlorine or sulfite fibers breaks removing wood lignin, the natural glue that binds the fibers together. Chemical pulp is often called "chemical pulp 'because lignin is removed. The work that still contain lignin tends to yellow are exposed to sunlight, so the papers "without wood" are preferred for all grades of quality office and printing paper.

Why use recycled paper?

As more than 50% of all landfill waste is paper, the act of recycling a waste product becomes an important practical resource. To make recycled paper do not have to crush wood for cooking or fibers, as the paper has gone through this process the first time, what a great energy saving and pollution. The paper can be used simply dropped into a tub of water and fiber will be released for the manufacture of new paper. very deinked documents will ink skimmed or dispersed away from gray color make recycled paper, office paper, while the light-ink and printers "short white can produce more recycled paper. A single fiber paper can be recycled about five times before it is too short to make a strong paper tissue. Yes, in the grand scheme, virgin paper still needs to be harvested and produced to provide a source of recycled fiber, but the relationship should be about 20% pure to 80% recycling, not the reverse, as it is today.

When calculating energy consumption and carbon footprint of recycled paper, some manufacturers include in their calculations the energy expended in the collection of waste paper for show recycled paper has a higher energy consumption than virgin grades. In fact, the waste paper collection happens anyway, if taken to landfill waste through local collections. Therefore, the energy used in the collection of waste paper is not an additional energy use derived from the recycling process, but the energy used in the waste paper collection and disposal should be added to the environmental cost of virgin paper manufacturing.

In general, we must all be careful quantitative statements that an action or another is more or less environmentally beneficial. All these calculations are open to manipulation by the parties interested and meet the social and market power. Nature operates through sustainable processes cyclical and we should make a qualitative assessment on support similar cyclical processes, such as recycling.

Sustainable forestry

In response to the demand for environmentally responsible papers, paper manufacturers Virgin has been chosen to certify many of their roles as "coming from sustainable forests. As the use of recycled fiber is the most logical choice of the environment, would have been better for these manufacturers to start using more recycled pulp – but this would require a considerable investment in new machinery. It would also undermine the advantage of virgin pulp producers have in the transmission of the costs and responsibilities of disposal. Indeed, local services and recycling collection tips are subsidizing the manufacturers of virgin paper, and thereby increase profits.

European certification of documents from sustainable sources not virgin change anything about how these documents are produced. The vast majority of virgin paper fibers in Europe come from Scandinavia and conifer plantations in northern Germany. These forests are often owned and paper producers have been a sustainable source of fiber for the European paper industry for over a hundred years. Ironically, even the sustainable forest certification schemes recognizes that recycling is the best environmental solution for the production of paper, and introduced recycled paper content forest certification labels to reflect the environmental value of recycling, although that can never be sure what a forest is recycled fiber. One has to wonder why forest certification are bothering to certify European paper products, when all he is accomplishing is to weaken the demand for recycled paper?

Recently, there has been an increase in the import documents from newly planted eucalyptus trees, prized for its performance in fiber. These are often certified to sustainable forestry and / or labels of zero carbon emissions. Eucalyptus itself is a fast growing tree native invasive arid areas of Australia. Their growth rate can be attributed to its large root network that produces huge amounts of water and nutrients from the surroundings through transpiration. The result is that other types of vegetation can grow near the tree and the soil is degraded rapidly. In addition, due to the volatile oils and highly flammable leaves, densely packed plantation presents a serious fire risk.

There are active campaigns in Portugal and the environment South Africa, where eucalyptus is grown on agricultural land for paper production. Not only are they damaging eucalyptus land for export earnings in the short term but also the much needed land use for essential food crops. An important lesson to be learned about environmental sustainability here, where we should not only myopic focus on carbon dioxide emissions, but we have to think more holistically and naturally, only a new tree is planted, this does not mean that the environment benefits – it depends on what the tree is and where it is planted.

Bleach secondary chlorine bleach

Many virgin fiber papers have a 'Totally Chlorine Free (TCF) or Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) environmental label. In the manufacture of paper, chlorine oxidants were used in the production of paper fibers from trees through the process of "pasta chemistry. In the past factories, many of high quality paper effluents in the rivers have risen and contaminants chlorine sulphite, and this was the main environmental impact associated the production of paper. But in the last twenty years, strict controls on emissions, and the realization that the plants were just throwing chemicals expensive cost could be recovered, has virtually eliminated the contamination. There has been a move away from sulfates and base chemicals chlorine (linked to the destruction of the ozone layer) to oxygen-based processes to extract more benign fibers. The vast majority of virgin paper is now free chlorine, and the choice of a role based solely on this criterion has little impact on the current process of paper production. Recycled paper can not currently be classified as free chlorine, however, because you can never guarantee the source of all recycled fibers. In fact, many papers recycled paper containing chlorine used to underwent secondary bleaching when originally made.

secondary laundering is the use of whiteners and brighteners to improve the visual appearance paper. Most recycled paper are not subject to fading high school, damaging the fibers, and maintenance of fiber strength is essential the creation of good quality recycled paper. Recycled paper is usually white or gray depending on the origin of paper used in them. Commercial waste recycling and documents office to produce whiter light ink recycled paper. Low-grade sources of waste – such as magazines and newspapers printed in large measure – to produce more gray leaf recycled. The availability of "high white" recycled pulp is quite limited, which urges people to use low-grade documents post-consumer waste in possible the use of waste paper mountain sitting. In practice, however, grayer paper is much easier to read than the books that white high often contain optical brighteners (dyes that absorb light in the ultraviolet and violet, and re-emit in the blue region) to reflect back the light in her eyes.

Why not the lobby of his office, business or organization using gray paper? more white papers that are of better quality, simply because its color. In fact, once upon a time the brown bread used to be considered of poor quality, and white bread was seen as more refined and a premium product. Today we like white bread cheap and inferior quality compared to the overall healthy brown bread. It's just a matter of perception, you can always change for the better.
