The DC Justice League

DC Comics was founded in 1934, known then as ‘National Allied Publications’. Detective Comics premiered in 1937 but National Allied Publications fell into financial difficulties and it’s owner was forced to take on magazine publisher Harry Donenfeld as a partner to continue publishing Detectice Comics. Detective Comics Inc was formed out of that partnership and this is where the initial DC originated from. They soon released Action Comics, the premiere introducing Superman in 1938 started the superheroes genre and which proved a massive sales success and was followed up in 1939 with the introduction of Batman. Today DC is owned by Warner Bros who is in turn owned by Time Warner.

Marvel Superheroes

Marvel Publishing Inc mostly referred to as Marvel Comics was founded in 1939 but was known then as Timely Comics. In the 1950’s it was known as Atlas Comics but in 1961 and with the launch of the Fantastic Four, it became the Marvel we know today. Marvel have created the well known characters of Spider-Man, Iron-Man, the X-Men, Wolverine, the Hulk, Captain America, Daredevil and the Fantastic Four. Marvel has surpassed it’s long time competitor and rival DC Comics to become the largest American comic book publisher. In 2009 The Walt Disney Company bought Marvel Entertainment for just over $4 Billion.

Together DC and Marvel make up for over 80% of comics sold in the USA.
